Whangaihe Bay to Kingfish Lodge at Whanguroa Harbour - total distance 5 nautical miles.
Departed 16.35, arrived 18.30
Stayed at anchor all day enjoyed the sun, sea and location. Took the zodiac ashore with Marion and Marla to explore the beach and climb the grassy headland in search of sheep, but they were spotted on the far distant cliff, so we discovered a deserted beach on the other side and enjoyed some skinny dipping instead! What bliss! Shared a picnic lunch (all three boat crews) on shore with homemade chocolate birthday cake and party hats, quietly baking under the scorching sun, slightly sozzled on sangria!
Finally weighed anchor at 16.20 and sailed out under light NW winds on a broad reach, outhaul released and jib cars forward to improve sail trim! Main traveller to leeward rather than releasing main sheet ti improve sail shape (pretty poor as clew tightly wound on boom) Helmed under power to water float as we neared Kingfish Lodge (frequented by the rich and famous in these here parts!) to refill our forward tanks with fresh underground water, and on to Kingfish Lodge where I successfully reversed stern onto dock after securing bow line to mooring buoy, not helped by the many onlookers.
Delicious dinner of rack of NZ lamb and fresh mint, washed down with local Merlot/Cab Sauvignon blend as we all sat tucked inside the lodge by the open doors looking out at the bay as the sweet smell of hibiscus wafted in on the ocean breeze.
Yes, another starry, starry night!
